In recent years, the artificial intelligence giant OpenAI has been the subject of several controversies, some of which have been particularly serious. In April 2025, sadly, a young boy took his own life following prolonged conversations with ChatGPT. The chatbot responded affirmatively to the suicidal thoughts and suggestions of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old Californian, even going so far as to discourage him from talking about his pain with his family.

Following the incident, the parents sued OpenAI for wrongful death. According to a series of documents analysed by the Financial Times, the company asked the family for a complete list of attendees at the young man's funeral, suggesting that the company might seek to sue friends and family members.

The Raine family's lawyers have described what happened as “intentional persecution”. OpenAI, meanwhile, has repeatedly stated how important it is for the company to protect young people, explaining that it has recently introduced a new security routing system and parental controls within the chatbot.
