As of 31 January, a large part of the music universe on Tiktok seems to have almost entirely disappeared. Universal Music Group (UMG) had already announced during the last weeks of January its intention to withdraw its sound content from the application.

Following negotiations regarding the appropriate compensation for the artists owning the tracks on Tiktok, Universal accused the platform of 'wanting to build a business based on music without wanting to pay its fair value'. The negotiations, unfortunately, did not go well, and this caused disagreement between the two parties involved.

The disappointing contract proposed by Tiktok proposed even lower working and economic conditions than the previous one, and UMG preferred to walk away from any collaboration with the application.
