The term "deepfake" describes a precise type of digital content: images or videos subjected to manipulation, often through artificial intelligence, to achieve results that show a certain subject in situations and events he or she never experienced.

This technology is often used to construct videos and images intended to give the subject a bad name, whether in the personal, professional, or political sphere. Unfortunately, deepfakes have quickly become the method of choice for generating pornographic content to be used for "revenge porn," pedophilia, or defamation.

Currently, in England and Wales, sharing, without the subjects' consent, explicit content created through deepfake technology is illegal. Before long, even just creating such content could become prohibited. The two nations mentioned would be the first to implement this law - Scotland and Northern Ireland seem to have set out to follow the example of their neighbours.
