NaNoWriMo, a renowned US non-profit organisation promoting creative writing worldwide, has recently come under the spotlight for a rather surprising reason. The organisation, which originally started as a simple creative project, has expanded to the point of becoming an engaging challenge for any creative mind: during the month of November, in fact, writers are invited to dedicate themselves to writing a manuscript of at least 50,000 words.
In a recent post published by the association, a spokesperson shared the organisation's position regarding the use of artificial intelligence within the projects published in the November challenge: ‘"aNoWriMo does not explicitly endorse any specific approach to writing, nor does it explicitly condemn any approach, including the use of AI."
The words of the organisers deeply shocked the public, obtaining rather aggressive opinions from their readers. The offending statement was deepened with the addition of a controversial thought from the organisation: "we also want to be clear that the categorical condemnation of AI has classist and ableist undertones."
