In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Yoshua Bengio, known as the ‘Grandfather of Artificial Intelligence’ thanks to his contribution to the creation of this technology, stated that it could soon become what kills us all. The continuous and unstoppable development of this controversial resource is rapidly shaping it into the most intelligent and dangerous enemy of humanity itself.
We are building a formidable adversary, and the worst thing is that we don't seem to be able to realise it. We are constantly under its control; the eternal desire to achieve progress, to accumulate more prestige and more economic liquidity is putting us at a disadvantage compared to the developments that we are literally offering it.
"If we build machines that are much smarter than us and have their own preservation goals, that's dangerous." Bengio's concern is not focused on a possible post-apocalyptic future, but rather refers to the current real consequences that we can see every day: the manipulation of public opinion, the automation of disinformation, and the facilitation of illegality.
